Bryan and Stephanie’s Surprise Proposal

Bryan and Stephanie's Surprise Proposal It has been a long time since I’ve blogged. And if there’s ever a reason to start back up again, it’s for Bryan and Stephanie’s surprise proposal! It all started with a {slightly} panicked voicemail from Bryan explaining that he was in need of a photographer for a surprise proposal that weekend! If I’m able, I will NEVER turn down a surprise proposal. Ever. These things make my heart sing!I met up with Bryan that Friday over lunch to location scout and get our plan of action. It was a surprise, after all. I couldn’t be seen or it would ruin everything! I arrived at Pitt Street Bridge (a former bridge turned ...

Bryan and Stephanie’s Surprise Proposal

The time is finally here for my big announcement!! HOORAY!!! Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18Love and business are not often concepts that are coupled together. Over the years, I’ve seen many great examples of businesses that practice love and truly care for people, but I’ve struggled with how to do the same in my own business. As you might have heard a few weeks ago, I am stepping away from weddings, and a big reason for that is to free up my time for a new calling and a complete business makeover! I’m so excited to share with you a completely new direction for Leah Judway Photography: Buy 1, Give 1!What ...

A Farewell To Weddings
July 08, 2015
Bryan and Stephanie’s Surprise Proposal

Many of you have heard that I am stepping away from weddings. While the last nine years of shooting weddings has been a blast, I’m sad (but, also excited) to say that I am taking my business in a different direction. As of a few months ago, I am no longer marketing myself as a wedding photographer. There are so many awesome things about my time spent shooting weddings, but after a year of thinking, talking, planning, and (now) committing, the time has come to shift my business in a different direction. AN INCREDIBLY EXCITING DIRECTION!! But more on that in a couple weeks. ;) I was going to write out this whole farewell to weddings and post it on here, but my husband beat me to it! ...

'In Sickness And In Health' - Danielle's Story
May 15, 2015
Bryan and Stephanie’s Surprise Proposal

Ages ago, my friend and client, Danielle, booked this family portrait session with me. This was not unusual; Danielle has been a loyal client for years now. I thought that this was going to be like every session that had come before... I had no idea that Danielle and her husband, Keith, were about to live out a nightmare. I had no idea that these pictures would mean anything more than a physical representation of another year passing.About a month before our session, I got an email from Danielle that shook me to the core and brought me to my knees. I cried and prayed while I read her story. She kept this story quiet and to herself for a long time, but now she is ready to talk about it.This ...

Deployment Portraits

Bryan and Stephanie’s Surprise Proposal

This portrait session is such a special one for me for so many different reasons. As an ARMY brat, there's a special place in my heart for the men and women of our armed forces… particularly for their families. Growing up in the military is such a special thing, filled with unique challenges and the most wonderful adventures. For many, it's also filled with the dread of deployment. My heart breaks for the families left behind, waiting to see their loved one again. One of my favorite things to do to try to ease just a little bit of that pain is to offer family portrait sessions to those dealing with deployment. It's one way I've found that I can not only give back, but bless the ...

A Girl and Her Horse
April 11, 2014
Bryan and Stephanie’s Surprise Proposal

What do you do when you have a beautiful assistant who just happens to own horses and fits into your wedding dress? Pick a day, hope it turns out to be nice and then run around with the camera, of course. I would really like you all to think that I just went out and shot a bride with her horse and everything just fell into place simply because I'm just that talented. That would be really stretching the truth. Years ago, as part of a school assignment, I took some pictures of Madison and her horse, Vantage. I quickly learned that it is hard to include a horse in a portrait. Like, way, way harder than I ever imagined. They are gigantic and awkward and rarely do what you want them to. But I ...

Anne of Green Gables
March 18, 2014
Bryan and Stephanie’s Surprise Proposal

A while back I had the thought that I wanted to shoot something a little more dreamy than your typical bridal portrait. I know a girl with the most beautiful red hair who inspired me to design a shoot with a different kind of bride. Once I found this dress on etsy, the rest just sort of fell into place. I purposely didn't bring a stylist in for this shoot because I wanted my model to do her own hair and makeup. It was important to me that she just looked like a girl playing dress up. I wanted the simple look of a dreamer. I expressed this to my model when designing the shoot, and she said, "It's so Anne of Green Gables." Exactly! She put into words exactly what I was envisioning. I did this ...

The Unconventional Bride
September 13, 2013
Bryan and Stephanie’s Surprise Proposal

A few years back, I visited Coney Island for the first time. Like any wedding photographer who has ever traveled anywhere, I thought, "I must shoot a bride here." If I had a nickel for every time I thought that, in every place I've thought that, I would own a boat. And a dozen horses. And really expensive vintage roller skates. But I digress. For whatever reason, Coney Island stuck with me. Over the next few years I kept it tucked away as a venue I wanted, but I needed the right client. Eventually I came across the unconventional bride, with her boldly colored body art that contrasted her white wedding dress. I fell in love. I thought, "that's a bride I want." However, it didn't happen for ...

It’s ok that I’m not your photographer.
March 12, 2013

It’s ok that I’m not your photographer. I still love you and cherish our friendship. The first few years of my career, I struggled a lot with the idea of friends having someone else take their picture. It was a silly sort of jealousy that was, without a doubt, childish. But that’s okay. I have no problem admitting this to you all. I was a newbie. I was immature, so to speak, being in the first stages of my career. Not to say I’ve got it all figured out now. The thought of that makes me chuckle. But there are a few things I’ve learned since then, and one of them is, I’m not for everyone. At first, the idea of everyone I love not understanding, or (gasp) ...
